Despite extensive research, achieving long‑lasting all‑solid‑state batteries (ASSB) remains difficult, because integrating promising materials into a stable cell is challenging and no single solid‑state electrolyte meets all key requirements – such as high conductivity, stability, sustainability and processability.

The FUNCY‑SSB project will develop a sustainable, advanced sulfide‑based SSE and a tailored recycling process. The approach includes coating the sulfide electrolyte with tailored functional polymers to enhance processability, electrochemical stability, and interfacial compatibility with both the cathode and lithium anode, while ALD‑engineered surface modifications promote strong polymer adhesion and efficient ion transport. This strategy aims for more stable, durable cells with improved manufacturability and recyclability compared with the state of the art.

The sustainable-by-design electrolyte approach of FUNCY-SSB will be realized by evaluating recyclability and economic as well as ecological potential of the SSE in parallel to the material development process.
